Capital Campaign Contribution Form
Great Buddhist masters have described generosity as one of the six activities of the Mahayana path that produce immediate karmic results. Every time you open your heart to others, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas respond in kind to remove obstacles and help you achieve your personal goals. When you offer support to Lamas, the Dharma, and the Sangha, the gifts you receive in return are magnified in ways beyond your imagination. In this spirit, Kagyu Thubten Chöling offers you an opportunity to help realize your own aspirations and help all sentient beings to attain peace and freedom through contributing to our new Capital Campaign, which is designed to offer support to an unimaginable number of sentient beings through achieving the following goals.
Goal I:
& Construction of the Retreat House
Before his parinirvana in 1989, Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche asked Lama Norlha Rinpoche to build a stupa at Kagyu Thubten Chöling monastery. We’re pleased to announce that after nearly two decades of effort, the Enlightenment Stupa for World Peace is nearly complete. Officially consecrated in September, 2006 by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, the Enlightenment Stupa for World Peace will serve as a site for profound ceremonial blessings performed by esteemed Lamas, a place of contemplation, devotion, and practice for visitors, and a beacon of hope shining across the Hudson River. The stupa is a symbol of the Buddha's mind and benefits beings by preventing disease, averting obstacles, correcting imbalances and drawing peace and prosperity to the region where it stands and from there to the entire country.
In order to fulfill these functions, however, the tall, symbolic spire must be finished and the surrounding landscape must be adjusted for easy and appropriate access for all visitors. The interior must be furnished with pecha tables, cushions, lighting, and the ritual instruments necessary for special ceremonies and regular practice. Maintenance of the stupa will, of course, require a regular supply of electricity and heat.
In order to accommodate visitors to the Stupa, Kagyu Thubten Chöling monastery is also reconfiguring an existing structure on the property as a Retreat House, adding eight new rooms for visitors as well as people interested in engaging in short-term meditation/practice retreats. The renovated Retreat House will provide much needed space for the growing number of people who come to Kagyu Thubten Chöling in search of an opportunity to discover and practice the Dharma in its purest form.
The construction of the Retreat House is only the first step in an extraordinary project conceived by Lama Norlha Rinpoche. Those of us who have had the blessing of meeting Rinpoche and the many great teachers who have come to Kagyu Thubten Chöling have directly experienced the value of Rinpoche’s lineage and spiritual heritage, and their impact on our own lives.
For thirty years Rinpoche has worked to bring the clarity and peace of the Buddha’s teachings to America. He has concentrated on developing an authentic, traditional practice of meditation, liturgy, and monastic life right here in the Hudson Valley, one that will serve as a wellspring for future teachers and meditators.
Now Rinpoche wishes to enrich this country by creating the Maitreya Center, a place dedicated to laypeople and monastics who wish to benefit from the serenity of mind and clarity of purpose that only meditation can bring. With Rinpoche’s goal in mind, KTC is beginning a major capital campaign to build, endow and maintain The Maitreya Center. The Maitreya Center will concentrate on the study and practice of meditation, and will do so in the context of exploring the arts and sciences, thereby creating a community of spiritual learning.
Creation of an Endowment Fund
Kagyu Thubten Chöling is continually evolving, and you are a part of its evolution. Without your help, there would be no monastery; without the monastery, there would be no place to meet the genuine lamas and receive their precious teachings. In order to ensure continuous operation of the monastery into the future, Kagyu Thubten Chöling needs to establish a basic endowment to provide support, security and medical care for the monks and nuns who have dedicated their lives to extending peace, wisdom, and compassion to all sentient beings.
