Study Group on The 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva (Tue, Mar 05, 2019 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm)

Led by Lamas Depa and Lhadrun, we will explore in depth The 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva; a classic text in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism that remains vividly applicable to life in the 21st-century West. It was written by Gyalse Ngulchu Togme Zangpo, a humble 14th-century monk, as a reminder to himself of his aspirations for traveling the path of a bodhisattva and using everything that happened to him as a basis for awakening. How can a 14th-century Tibetan text be relevant to the very different lives we lead now? Because we still face the same basic human situations Togme Zangpo did in his day, and have the same emotional reactions that keep us cycling in samsara. Thus, Togme Zangpo's advice remains as relevant today as when it was first composed.

We will be using two main books - Traveling the Path of Compassion by Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje and The Heart of Compassion by Dilgo Khyentse - as well as a supplementary book - Reflections on Silver River by Ken McLeod.

All three books are available in the KTC bookstore. They are recommended but not required for participation. Newcomers are welcome any Tuesday. There are no prerequisites and no attendance requirement. The study group meets in the Maitreya Center, downstairs dining room.

Kalu Rinpoche's Practice of Aspiration Prayers (Monlam Choga), followed by the Short Practice of the Peaceful & Wrathful Deities (Shitro) (Sat, Mar 23, 2019 10:00 am - 12:00 pm)

Chanting of the Monlam Choga, a practice of offering and aspiration prayers compiled by Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche. This is followed by the short liturgy of Shitro (Peaceful and Wrathful Deities), a profound practice from the cycle of teachings and meditations of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. We dedicate this practice to the deceased in order to purify negativities, avert obstacles in the bardo, and establish a connection with the deities that will ripen in future lives.

Daily Chenrezig Chanting Practice (Sat, Mar 23, 2019 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm)

Please join us as we chant and meditate in order to realize our inborn great compassion. Our root lama, Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche, emphasized the practice of Chenrezig for his western students. In his own words, “Chenrezig represents the union of love and compassion of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Meditation on Chenrezig develops that love and compassion in practitioners, thus leading to the realization of emptiness, the ultimate nature. That is why I chose this deity for Western students.”

The liturgy is translated as well as written phonetically. You can chant along, or silently read the translation.

This practice session takes place in the main house (yellow house) upstairs shrine room.

Study Group on The 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva (Tue, Mar 26, 2019 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm)
